The Mahoning County Communicator

Youngstown Urban Minority Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Outreach Program, Inc.

The Philosophy of the Youngstown Urban Minority Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Outreach Program, (YUMADAOP) is that violence, alcohol, tobacco and other drug (ATOD), prevention, treatment, and re-entry interventions must be culturally and gender appropriate if the needs of the African-American and Hispanic communities are truly going to be addressed.

Our goals are that all youth and adolescents who actively participate in YUMADAOP prevention programs will learn skills which will enable them to achieve:

  • lifelong abstinence from the use of ATOD
  • lifelong abstinence from committing acts of interpersonal violence
  • success in not becoming teen parents
  • success in not becoming re-incarcerated

The results of our prevention interventions will be:

  • A reduced number of youth and adolescents using ATOD among those we    serve.
  • An increase in skills and strategies to avoid using ATOD among those we serve, and a reduction in Risk Factors which increase the probability that ATOD use will occur.
  • Reduced episodes of interpersonal violence among youth and adolescents we serve.
  • A reduced number of teen parents among those we serve.
  • An increased number of youth and adolescents completing high school among those we serve.
  • A reduced number of ex-offenders being re-institutionalized

This will contribute to efforts to improve our community by increasing the number of youth and adolescents who become productive responsible, tax paying citizens who are gainfully employed and are not engaging in dysfunctional behaviors which drain community resources and continue to perpetuate the cycle of dysfunctional families.
