Pit Bull Terrier Notice

Attention: Pit Bull Terrier Owners:
As you may know, there are specific maintenance regulations regarding the keeping of the breed commonly known as a Pit Bull Terrier in the State of Ohio. In an effort to educate you (the owner, keeper, or harborer) the following analysis of Section 955.22 of the Ohio Revised Code is being provided for you so that you may comply with these regulations rather than subject yourself to court action for failure to comply.
- License the dog.
- When the dog is ON the premises, it must be confined in one of the following…
- A locked pen which has a top.
- A locked fenced yard.
- A locked enclosure which has a top.
- The lock MUST require a key or a combination to open.
- When the dog is OFF the premises, it must be kept on a chain-link leash or tether no longer than 6 feed AND do at least one of the following:
- Keep the dog in a locked pen or enclosure which has a top.
- Have the leash controlled by a person who is of suitable age and discretion or affix the leash to the ground or a stationary object so the dog is restrained and station such a person close enough to the dog to prevent it from causing injury.
- Muzzle the dog.
- Liability insurance must be obtained with an insurer authorized to write liability insurance in the State of Ohio for not less than $100,000.00 per dog because of damage or bodily injury to or death of a person caused by the dog. If you do not have home or renters insurance, you can contact the Ohio Insurance Exchange, Lancaster, Ohio at: 1-800-473-1215 for the proper animal mortality insurance.
- In the event of the sale or transfer of the dog, the proper forms necessary for such a transfer of ownership must be filed. These forms will be provided free of charge at the Office of the Dog Warden. The transfer fee is twenty-five cents.
Criminal penalties under this section range from misdemeanor in the fourth degree to a felony in the fourth degree.
