25% State Recycling Mandate Reached!
The Ohio EPA, in review of the District’s 2007 Annual Report, determined that the District has reached the State of Ohio recycling goal of 25% for residential and commercially generated solid waste. Thanks to all the efforts of the Community Recycling Coordinators, local government officials, and the tens of thousands of recycling enthusiasts in MahoningCounty – we reached the goal. That is amazing considering the District reported a pathetically low 9.7% recycling rate in 2004!
A special note of appreciation is due to the City of Youngstown for passing the Scrap Metal Processor’s Reporting Ordinance whereby these private recyclers must submit a monthly report to the District. The recovered metal weights have made a tremendous contribution to the District’s overall recycling level. We appreciate the monthly reports from: Broadway Iron and Metal, Inc.; Chuck’s Westside Recycling; DiverSteelCity; Midwest Steel and Alloy; Vivo Metal Trading; US Trading; and Youngstown Iron and Metal. We appreciate all the private companies, schools, non-profit organizations, and governmental entities that have greatly contributed to our recycling total. Let’s continue to progress and reach a 50% level in years ahead!
