Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month 2007
During the month of March, the Mahoning County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities is celebrating MRDD Awareness Month and invites you to consider the true meaning of this year's theme, "Focus on What We Can Do." The goal of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is to increase the public's awareness and understanding of people who have mental retardation and other developmental disabilities so that these citizens will have increased access in our communities to employment, education, housing and social opportunities. The purpose of MRDD Awareness Month activities are to increase awareness of what mental retardation and developmental disabilities are and to educate the public about the services and programs provided by the Mahoning County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (MCBMRDD),and to encourage the public to better understand the individuals served. .Larry Duck, Superintendent of the Mahoning County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities said, "During MRDD Awareness Month we encourage people to learn more about the hundreds of people in this community who have disabilities. For example, when you see a child who uses a wheelchair - see the child, not the disability. And when you see a man with mental retardation working at your local supermarket, see the man, not his disability." Focus on what people with disabilities can do. Playing, working, socializing - everything people without disabilities do. During March, Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, take a moment to get acquainted with someone who has a developmental disability. You'll learn that they have as much to offer as everyone else you know. Everyone has something to offer. FOCUS on what they CAN do!
