Mike Sciortino’s extensive experience in county government and diverse educational background prepared him well for his role as Mahoning County Auditor.
Sciortino was elected to his first full term in office in November 2006. Before that, he was Director of the Mahoning County Board of Elections from 1999 to 2005 and Deputy Director from 1996 to 1999. During his watch, he reduced overall expenditures by 25 percent, implemented touch-screen electronic voting and managed a precinct reduction program that saved $70,000 annually.
Sciortino also was President of Ohio Association of Election Officials and Chairman of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission’s Standards Board. He has testified before the Ohio House of Representatives and Ohio Senate regarding ballot security, electronic voting, Voter Verified Paper Audit Trails, campaign finance reform and Ohio’s election reform bill. He also testified many times before the United States Election Assistance Commission on issues related to the 2004 Voluntary Voting System Guidelines.
As Assistant Mahoning County Administrator from 1993 to 1996, Sciortino managed personnel and financial matters that included policy implementation concerning hospitalization, employee development and competitive hiring. Sciortino was influential in strategic efforts that reduced the county’s workers’ compensation costs by 18 percent.
Sciortino earned a bachelor’s degree in political science at Youngstown State University, a master’s degree in public administration at The University of Akron and a law degree from The University of Akron School of Law. He has been a licensed attorney since 2003, with an emphasis in civil litigation and business law.
Sciortino is a past president of the Mahoning County Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services Board and has been awarded a life time membership in the Ohio Association of Election officials. He is a current member of the Ohio and Mahoning County Bar Associations as well as the Association of Trial Lawyers of America.
Mike presently serves on the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County Board of Trustees and is Secretary and Administrator of the County’s Information & Technology Department. He is a member of Ohio Government Finance Officers Association, The Ohio County Auditors Association Executive Committee and Mahoning County’s Tax Incentive Review Council, Records Commission and Microfilm Boards.
