Other Recycling Opportunities
In addition to year-round programs such as Curbside Recycling and Drop-off Recycling Centers, you can find many other ways to recycle specialized items in Mahoning County. It's always best to call ahead for updated information before preparing items to be recycled.
HOUSEHOLD BATTERIES
Mahoning County residents may now recycle their household batteries at any of the 17 branches of the Public Libraries of Youngstown and Mahoning County.
Each Library branch now has a specially marked barrel or other container that will accept the following types of batteries:
•AA, AAA, C and D batteries
•9-volt (rectangular) batteries
•Button batteries (from hearing aids, watches, etc.)
•Ni-Cad batteries from your household electronics
(Note: Lead-acid and fluid-type batteries are not accepted.)
You can also pick up a convenient Battery Collection Bag at the Library, or call The Green Team at (330) 740-2060 to request one. Or simply use your own bag and bring it to your nearest Library location when it's full.
PLASTIC BAGS
Some Mahoning County supermarkets have drop-off bins that will accept plastic bags. Bags that have held unpackaged food items (e.g., produce) should not be recycled. Also, be sure to remove receipts or any other paper from the bags before recycling.
PAINTS
Remember to purchase only as much paint as you need to complete a project. Unused oil-based paint may be recycled at The Green Team's Household Hazardous Waste Collection Days in May and October.
Latex paint is no longer accepted for collection. To dispose of unused latex paint, dry the paint using kitty litter or sand. Remove lids and place latex paint cans that are empty or contain dried paint in your trash.
If you do have paint that can be reused (minimum 1/3 full) you can also contact YSU re:CREATE at 330-941-2238.
