Mission Statement:
"Assist veterans, and the spouse, widow, children, parents, and dependents of veterans in presenting claims for benefits from Department of Veterans Affairs and the State of Ohio; and, obtain temporary financial assistance as outlined in Title 59 of the Ohio Revised Code. Networking with other public and private agencies to provide needed asssitance, enabling our clients to meet his/her daily living needs. Provide daily transportation for veterans to both DVA Medical Facilities in Cleveland and Brecksville, Ohio and Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky, Ohio. Ensure each Mahoning County veteran’s graves are marked."
What We Do:
The Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission (VSC), established under Title 59 of the Ohio Revised Code (ORC), is dedicated to advising and assisting persons in the Armed Forces of the United States, veterans, and the spouses, children, parents, and dependents of veterans in presenting claims and obtaining rights and/or benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs of the State of Ohio. They accredit several staff members to present claims before the Department of Veterans Affairs.
The Commission provides temporary financial assistance to needy veterans or the needy spouse, surviving spouse, parent, minor child, or ward of a veteran, who has been a resident of Mahoning County for at least three months before application for assistance as outlined in Title 59 of the ORC. To be eligible for services, the veteran must be discharged under honorable conditions with at least 90 days active service. This does not include active duty training, unless discharged sooner by proper authority.
The VSC offers daily transportation for eligible veterans to the DVA Medical Facilities in Cleveland and Brecksville, Ohio. This Service is offered to veterans who schedule through the VSC. Please remember that seats are on a first scheduled, first serviced basis.
The Veterans Service Commission also assists the Mahoning County Veterans Groups with their programs observing Memorial Day each year.
- Assist residents in applying for compensation, pension, education and home loan benefits

- Provide transportation to VAMC Cleveland (13 passengers daily)

- Assist eligible clients in nursing homes apply for VA benefits (OUTREACH)

- Participate in patriotic observances
