The Mahoning County Sheriff's Office is currently accepting applications for the following positions:

Housing Unit Deputy (Correctional Officer)- Multiple Openings.  We will train and certify successful applicants.

Deputy Sheriff - Multiple Openings -  You must possess a current valid Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) certificate to apply for the position of Deputy Sheriff.

Reserve Deputy Sheriff - You must possess a current valid Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) certificate to apply for the position of Deputy Sheriff.

Employment Requirements

Minimum Requirements for Deputies

  • Age: A Deputy must turn 21 years prior to commission. The Ohio Revised Code 5503.02 stipulates that applicants must enter academy training prior to their 35th birthday. There are no exceptions or waiver.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED.
  • Driver’s License: Must have a valid operator’s license with no more than 6 points currently on your driving record. Must obtain a valid driver’s license prior to commission.
  • Citizenship: Must be a citizen of the United States.
  • Vision: You must have uncorrected vision no worse than 20/100 in each eye separately, correctable to 20/20 monocular vision. Color vision must be normal.
  • Hearing: Hearing level shall not exceed 30 decibels of loss at any of the following frequencies: 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, 2000 Hz, & 3000 Hz in each ear.
  •  Character: Applicant must be of good moral character.
  • Application Process: Successfully complete every step of the application process.

Possible Disqualifiers

The following occurrences in your background could result in rejection of your application:

  • Have you, recently used any of the following that was not prescribed by a physician: speed, steroids, cocaine, crack, heroin, amphetamines, or any other drug of abuse?
  • Have you recently used marijuana?
  • Have you ever sold or established pattern abuse of any of the following: heroin, cocaine, LSD, crack, crank, or PCP?
  • Have you pled Guilty or No Contest to or had a conviction for driving under the influence of alcohol and or drugs within the past five years, or more than one charge ever?
  • Are you currently in the Pretrial process for any criminal charge other than a traffic violation?
  • Do you currently have six or more points on your driving record in any jurisdiction?
  • Have you ever been convicted of or plead Guilty or No Contest to the following:
o  Aggravated Vehicular Homicide (2903.06 Ohio Revised Code).
o  Aggravated Vehicular Assault (2903.08 Ohio Revised Code).

  • Have you ever failed to meet the requirements of child support statutes, or a court order relating to the subject, due to a reason other than your inability to pay?
  • Have you ever been a participant in any of the following acts?:
o  Sexual relations with a child or a person of a childlike mind.
o   Molestation
o   Voyeurism
o   Incest
o   Forced a person into a sexual act
o   Coerced a person into a sexual act by intimidation, intoxication, deception
o   Sexual relations with a child or a person of a childlike mind.

  • Have you ever been convicted of domestic violence or a domestic violence related offense?
  • Have you ever engaged in sexual abuse in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility, or other institution (as defined in 42 U.S.C. 1997)?
  • Have you ever been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse?
  • Have you ever been been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described above?

Answering yes to any of the questions presented above will NOT result in the rejection of your application at this time. However, if you decide to continue with the selection process, your application shall be rejected after an official review of your application packet by the Sheriff's Screening Committee. You may decide to either continue processing and possibly be rejected at that time, or you may voluntarily withdraw from the selection process by notifying a Recruitment officer. This is not an all-inclusive list, as there may be other reasons your application could be rejected.
