Mahoning County Commissioners Announce a Draft ADA Transition Plan

Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires all public agencies – regardless of size – to ensure that their services, programs and activities are accessible to persons with disabilities. Compliance includes, but is not limited to, conducting a self-evaluation of building facilities, rights-of-way facilities and communications to identify any accessibility obstacles or issues that need to be addressed.  Public entities are required to provide an opportunity for interested persons, including individuals with disabilities or organizations representing individuals with disabilities, to participate in the self‐evaluation process by submitting comments [28 CFR Sec. 35.105(b)].

The Board of Mahoning County Commissioners, along with the Youngstown State University Center for Applied GIS, Annissa Neider Architecture and Michael Baker International, developed the ADA Self-Evaluation and Transition Plan, and the draft document is now complete.  See the Summary link below.  The Plan identifies barriers to accessibility, suggested methods for improving access, establishes a priority system for removing ADA barriers, and involves public outreach during preparation of the Plan.  The Plan will provide a strategic approach and recommendations for continued access improvements as the County implements its updated ADA Self-Evaluation and Transition Plan over the coming years.
